Lighting Design Manager

Job Summary

To lead a team of Lighting Design Engineers in order to design and deliver high quality lighting design schemes to key customers in order to maximise sales for the business.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

• Design and develop detailed lighting schemes to support sales. This will cover Commercial & Industrial outdoor projects such as road and street lighting, retail assets, hotels, sports lighting, flood lighting, urban scheme applications.
• Support bids for large scale projects and tenders by developing technical solutions which optimise cost-effectiveness.
• Work/apply applications design software to produce lighting designs that meet industry standards and customer specifications.
• Manage the Lighting Design team on a day to day basis and follow up designs with Lighting Designers and develop designs with input from development engineers, sales team and customers during projects.
• Be knowledgeable and able to apply relevant industry and segment guidelines, standards and regulatory trends and be able to translate these to the sales team.
• Identify new product development opportunities and generate performance standards and objectives
• Collaboration on product and projects presentation to end users, specifiers, partners, engineers and architectural offices, municipalities and local governments.
• Interact with the stakeholders to ensure the lighting effect meets the customers and regulatory requirements.
• Implement design changes (if required).
• Support lighting payback calculations (ROI) on a project by project basis in order to meet customer expectations.
• Travel to client locations to educate, direct and coordinate design of lit spaces.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities

• Relevant industry qualifications in Lighting Design disciplines.
• Working/practical experience of delivering lighting design projects.
• Management / leadership experience are essential to this role.
• Knowledge of lighting design software, fully conversant with AutoCad, Reality, Relux & Dialux software.
• Knowledge of industry organizations and understanding of standards influencing industry designs.
• Understanding of the use of Photoshop is an advantage but not essential.
• Knowledge of International lighting and photometric standards.
• Able to understand and communicate technical and commercial data to sales teams and customers.
• Excellent presentation skills and comfortable presenting to large audiences at internal or external conferences and seminars if required.
• PC literate (MS Word, Excel, Power-point, MSX/ Outlook).
• Fluency in English.
• Skilled in AutoCAD (Drawing manipulation and output) is essential.
• Desire/drive to improve knowledge and skills.
• Organised, attentive to detail.

Required education and experience

• Minimum of HND/Degree in Engineering or Science based subject or equivalent technical competence.
• Minimum of 5 years’ relevant lighting industry experience with team management and technical and commercial submissions.
• Membership of a professional lighting organisation such as ILP, SLL.
